WIP #6- Working on my smaller graphic

Having finished my main infographic, I am now working on my smaller grahpic and trying out a few ideas….

The last two are obviously very similar, with just a few changes to sizes. I am still leading towards the middle one, which was my original design. I also tried making the words into an arch shape, but this looked terrible and was hard to read. I would like the main focus to be the spiral because people often associate this with hypnosis, then the words kind of follow on from that.

Suggestions are definitely welcome!!! Please……

WIP #5 – Progress Update

I am now quite close to finishing my infographic. I have all the information I want on it and have played around with the colours and typography.

I have used five different colour schemes to separate the five sections around my infographic. I have tried to keep each colour scheme minimal, using different shades and tints of colours. I have also kept the boxes that contain writing the same colour across the whole infographic, so keep it cohesive. I have tried to use the colour sparingly but effectively.

I have also played with a few different fonts and settled on one that is easy to read. For my titles, I used the bold condensed form of the font. Sub-headings are written in capitals and general writing is just the normal font. This same formula is used for every section.

My main heading is the same font again, in bold capitals. However I have replaced the “O” in “Hypnosis” with a spiral font that illustrates the topic a little bit.

I have also started creating my mini image, but am not sure about how it looks at this stage. I have used the same spiral from the middle of my main image, but added a gradient behind it, made up of the same colours used in the main infographic. I have also used the same fonts for the heading, with an italicized “how it works” written beneath.

I feel like it is almost finished but would greatly appreciate any feedback on things I could improve or change!

WIP #4

After my class today I have turned a corner and gone in a new direction! Well it’s similar but is working much better for me!

Rather than trying to fit everything in a circle, I am now working with a grid layout surrounding a massive brain with my hypnotic spiral in the centre. I has been much easier to place my icons and text this way and the sections are much clearer.

Somewhere along the way I lost the colours in my icons, however I still intend to have each section with a different colour scheme (but still complementary to each other). This will make sure they stand out from the grey background and also separate the sections, making it easier to focus on one part at a time.

I haven’t yet decided what to do with the title, so any suggestions there are very welcome, as well as suggestions for other aspects! I still feel like it is a little busy, but a set of outside eyes would be helpful.

Here it is:

WIP #3 – From paper to infographic…

This week has been all about me trying to find my feet on illustrator. It hasn’t been easy but I think I am getting it now!

I have started to use shapes and vectors to create my layout and my icons. The first thing I did was use various sized circles to create my basic map, making sure everything was centered. I then watched a tutorial on how to create a cool spiral for the middle, and added my title text using the ‘type on a path’ tool.

For the rest of the week I have been brainstorming possible icons and finding ways to create them using illustrator. Most are traced from pictures from flickr, however the signs and the warped clock were just made using simple shapes and the direct select tool to alter them as needed.

One thing I have struggled with is arranging everything into a circle shape, but I think it is better to do this properly once I have made all of my icons. Then I can make sure the spacing and sizing of everything looks right. I have also struggled a little keeping my layers organized…there are so many!

I haven’t started looking at fonts and typography as of yet, again I think this will be easier once I have more to work with.

Excuse the slight mess of icons and words on the page, but here are a few progress pics from throughout the week:

WIP #2- Research, layout ideas and communication objectives

This week, after much thought, I settled on using the topic of hypnosis for my infographic. I chose this because the topic is one I know well, and also because I think the topic can be broken down and explained in quite a visual way. My main objective is to  teach someone who has no knowledge of hypnosis, about what hypnosis is, what it is NOT (as there is a lot of stigma around it), and how it can be used.

This week I have also done a lot of research into how hypnosis works. In a nutshell I have learnt:

– Hypnosis is a completely natural state that everybody experiences throughout the day.

– The brain wave patterns involved in hypnosis

– Who can be hypnotized and how they can be put into hypnosis.

– What the signs of being in hypnosis are

– The common myths and stigmas people associate with hypnosis

– Many uses of hypnosis (hypnotherapy, stage hypnosis, hypnoanesthesia and forensics in particular)

These topics/ideas are what I would like to communicate in my infographic.

However I also did more in depth research into hypnotherapy. I am wondering whether I should include the multiple uses, or just focus on how hypnosis is used in hypnotherapy instead, as this is very interesting and could be explained quite visually.

Upon doing this research, I have also started to sketch some ideas for layouts and possible icons on an A4 piece of paper. Basically I am just trying to organize my ideas. Here is my concept so far…11257649_1065212683506866_2084907341_nAs you can see, I have included the multiple uses of hypnosis in this concept. If I were do just focus on hypnosis use in hypnotherapy, then the whole right section would be used for this topic.

The spiral and heading in the middle would also be larger, but my drawing skills are not fabulous. I then tried to organize my ideas in a more creative way. Using the same information I arranged then inside circle shapes, giving the look of a spiral (I haven’t filled in with the little drawings and information in this sketch, but you get the idea)……11276210_1065221740172627_947022440_n

Rather than lines, I would probably use circles of different colour shades to achieve this look.

I am constantly thinking of icons and pictures I could used to represent these ideas without too many words. Although it’s a little difficult, I am getting there!

I would really appreciate some feedback on these ideas pronto, so that I can start on my image…..

WIP #1: INITIAL IDEAS

This week my class received our second assignment for the semester- to create an infographic with the purpose of explaining how something works.

I mentioned in my first post in my previous assignment, I really believe that it is essential to have a genuine interest in the topics you chose to do assignments on (if you’re lucky enough to have the choice). Having an interest in the topic, I find, helps sustain me throughout the work of the assignment. I think, especially with this infrographic, a previous interest and knowledge of the topic will help in thinking of visual icons I could use.

So with this in mind, I have spent the week thinking about how I could create an infrographic about something I am really interested in.

Idea #1= “Introverts: how do they work?”

I am a proud introvert, but unfortunately people have many misconceptions about what it means to be an introvert. They confuse introversion and shyness/social anxiety and often favor extroverted qualities in society without appreciating the qualities introverts bring to the world. They think of introversion and extroversion as polar opposites, when in reality, they exist on a spectrum with many people showing qualities of both personality types. This is a topic I am quite passionate about and have already researched in my own time. Visually, I think it could be difficult to think of icons. However I think it could be done and have looked at some infrographics on the topic already for ideas.

Idea #2= “How to the 5 Chinese elemental signs work?”

This is not a topic I have researched in depth yet, but I know a little bit about through personal interest. The five signs are fire, water, earth, wood and metal. Each have personality traits, senses, seasons, body parts, directions etc.. associated with them and these are used in Feng Shui and Chinese health. This is just an extremely basic understanding!! I was drawn to the visual potential of this idea. There are some quite intricate relationships between the elements that are best portrayed visually, and I can also visualize some good use of colour for each element and use of icons for the traits of the elements. My only concern is that this topic can be very complicated and I would need to break it down to a more basic level. An adaption of this idea could be to look at Eastern vs Western medicine and how they work differently. Icons such as the Yin Yang and the Caduceus coming straight to mind.

Idea #3 = “How does hypnotherapy work?”

This idea appeals to me because my mum is a hypnotherapist and many people don’t know what it is or how it works. It’s a super interesting topic that is reasonable easy to break down. Visually there are a couple of analogies involving icebergs that could make a good base for the infographic.

Idea #4 = “Feminism: how does it work?”

Again, this is a topic very personal to me. So many people have misconceptions about what feminist is about and I feel it could be explained quite nicely with an infographic. Statistics come across well visually in infrographics, and I know some great statistics surrounding the topic of feminism. A variation on this could be “Sexism: how does it work?”. Again, some people do not realise how prevalent sexism is in our everyday society (against men and women). Visually I think there are some good opportunities but, as with idea 1, it would take some careful thought to simplify the idea and think of effective icons. But I think it could be done and there are some example on the internet already.

These are my ideas at this stage, but I am totally open to new ones and variations. I’m still thinking as well!
